Safety At Sea - Bar Crossings
Home > Safety At Sea - Bar Crossings
Four New Zealand fishermen take the ride of their lives - as they attempt to cross the Grey River's dangerous bar in extremely rough waters.
Eager to return home after a week at sea, the captains of two ships decided to risk the crossing.
But the current and waves were far stronger than they expected.
[Wayne Corbin, Skipper]:
"Well, you can see a lot of water around you."
Trapped by enormous waves, the boats barely made any progress at all.
[Ray Haywood, Crewman]:
"The only thing that happened there was the big run in the river. If you've got ten knots of water running at you and the boat will only do eight knots, you just don't go forward at all."
The Auckland Coast Guard said the men were lucky to have made it across the bar unharmed.
But the fishermen did not break any laws despite the breakwater warning signal flashing in the port.
