The Maritime Union is calling for a full inquiry into the fishing industry, as a new foreign charter ship sets sail from Dunedin.
The Oyang 75 fishing trawler is a replacement for the Oyang 70 which sank in the Southern Ocean last August, killing six people.
The Oyang 75 has just completed its first shakedown cruise in New Zealand waters. At 23 years old it's certainly not new, but its operator says it's one of the more modern ships fishing here.
"Been fitted out with the latest navigation and electronic aids, it's had a complete new factory fitted for the processing side of it," says Russell Barron of Southern Storm Fishing.
Six people drowned and 48 were rescued when the Oyang 70 sank last year. An investigation is still underway.
